The Queen of Snapper.
In front of a 10,000 strong crowd, 8x World Surfing Champion, Stephanie Gilmore won the Gold Coast Pro for a record seventh time yesterday, 21 years after she skipped school to claim her very first CT win at Snapper Rocks.
Some things in surfing are just inevitable. The sun rises over Rainbow Bay, the sand at the Superbank shifts into those perfect tapering long walls, and sooner or later, Stephanie Gilmore finds the best one and does something extraordinary on it. Monday was no different. In a firing four-day competition in epic conditions, Steph delivered the performance of the event to claim her 34th Championship Tour (CT) win and extend her own record as the most decorated woman in surfing history.
It hasn't been the smoothest road back. Returning from two years away from competition, Steph lost in Round One at the Rip Curl Pro, Bells Beach and again at Margaret River last week, sitting dead last in the rankings heading into her home event.
"I didn't think I would be able to win an event this year. I cannot believe I won this event." - Stephanie Gilmore
She built heat by heat, wave by wave. A generational scalp over Erin Brooks, the surfer who beat her at this same event a year ago. Then the defending event winner, Bettylou Sakura Johnson. Then 2024 World Champion Caity Simmers in the quarters. Nadia Erostarbe, the breakout star of the week in the semis, where Steph dropped her first excellent score since 2023. And then, in the Final, the new World No. 1 and hot favourite, Luana Silva.

The Final itself was a masterclass in composure. Silva opened well and grabbed the lead, but a fall on a critical section opened the door. Steph walked straight through it and scored a 7.13 to reclaim the lead, followed by a near-perfect 9.50 that had the Cooly crowd absolutely losing their minds. Her two-wave total of 17.33 was the highest posted by any woman across the entire event. It left Silva needing a combination, which never came.
"I feel like I just got better and better every heat, and then I finally pieced it together in the Final. I paddle out in Finals and I just switch on." - Stephanie Gilmore

Competing in just her third event back, she looked like herself again. The best version of herself. It's the kind of win that reminds you why we fell in love with her in the first place - 21 years ago, a seventeen-year-old Wildcard skipping school to paddle out at Snapper and shock the world.
Full circle doesn't quite cover it.
