Pumping Surf Forecast For Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal (Oct 18 – 29)

19 ottobre 2016

SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Monday, October 17, 2016) – It’s that time of the year again! The world’s best surfers have arrived in Peniche, Portugal for the final European stop of the WSL Championship Tour, Rip Curl’s very own event, the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal.

The event window kicks off today, October 18, and is open until October 29, 2016. Since its inception in 2009, the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal has delivered unparalleled athleticism, competitive drama and adventure – and with the swell forecast for this year, we’re only in for more of the same.

Held in the world-class beach break of Supertubos, viewers can expect to see high-intensity barrels, wind-swept aerials and much more – it’s a canvas that will keep on giving. But the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal is not only going to deliver daily must-watch action – it’s also going to play a pivotal role in the 2016 World Title race. Right now, Rip Curl’s Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Matt Wilkinson (AUS) are both vying for the Title, chasing the tail of John John Florence (USA).

"After France I’m closer to the top and I’m going to give it my best." - Gabriel Medina, talking World Title hopes.

World number two, Medina, has closed the gap on Florence and now sits just 2,700 points behind the Hawaiian, after his runner-up finish in France. If Medina makes it into the quarterfinals at the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal the title race will automatically be sent to Hawaii – which will also keep the door open for Wilkinson. “I’m very happy to be back in Peniche,” said Medina. “It’s a place I like and the waves are really good. I hope everyone has a good event. I’m feeling confident and I’ve had some good results at the past few events. After France I’m closer to the top and I’m going to give it my best.”

The two event wildcards have also been allocated, going to Frederico Morais (PRT) and Rip Curl’s Miguel Blanco (PRT). Blanco, who is over the moon about the opportunity, will face off with Florence and Jadson Andre (BRA) in round one.

Event organizers will convene at 8 a.m. (local time) October 18 to assess conditions and make the first call.

Surfline, official forecast partner of the WSL, are calling for: Winds associated with Hurricane Nicole will set up long period W swell that fills in on Tuesday PM and continues for the middle and second half of the week with generally light winds and favorable conditions.

An active North Atlantic provides the potential for stronger NW/WNW windswell/swell for next weekend and into the early/middle part of the following week but local winds and conditions look dicey at this point.
