Tyler Wright Wins Historic Maui Pro at Hawaii’s Banzai Pipeline

21 décembre 2020

History was made today when 2 x world surfing champion Tyler Wright claimed the first women's Championship Tour win of the WSL season at surfing's ultimate proving ground, the Banzai Pipeline.

Wright claimed her 12th career Championship Tour win and her second Maui Pro title today against friend and rival 3 x world surfing champion Carissa Moore in their ninth Final’s matchup. Each and every wave paved the way for Women’s competitive surfing, everywhere.

There has never been a women’s event held at Pipeline before… History made…

The event was postponed and moved from its usual location of Honolua Bay, Maui, and became part of the Billabong Pipe Masters, after a fatal shark attack occurred on the morning of the final day of competition in Maui. A local surfer, tragically passed away after the attack.

Surfing smoothly, and with absolute precision, Tyler clinched the final with a great ride inside the last minute of the final. The significance of this achievement was not lost on Wright, who continually pushes the sport forward in both attitude and performance.

"I definitely don't take this for granted, to have this opportunity today is truly special," - Tyler Wright

“I want to thank all of the great women surfers who came behind me to get to this moment as we stand here at Pipeline on the shoulders of those giants."

Wright’s return signifies an end to her 18 month hiatus due to illness and shows that she is a strong woman, ready for anything the ocean can throw at her.

Today's Pipeline performance not only by Tyler and Carissa, but also by semi-finalists Sally Fitzgibbons and Tatiana Weston Webb who also charged without fear, is a natural progression for the best women’s surfers in the world and will undoubtedly set the stage for greater things to come.

Following a cancelled 2020 season due to Covid-19, Tyler’s outstanding result means she will be paddling out as world #1 in the yellow JEEP Leaders Jersey for event two on the abridged 20/21 WSL Championship Tour. The Sunset Open, will be held just a few beaches away from Pipeline at the famed Sunset Beach on January 18, 2021.

Following Tyler in the men’s Pipe Masters final Hawaiian John John Florence defeated Brazil’s Gabriel Medina in a close contest. Both surfers have 2 world surfing titles a piece, and both will compete for Gold at the Tokyo Olympics, with the pair setting the benchmark for what prepares to be a great year as pro surfing returns. Medina recently signed a new five year deal with Rip Curl.

What a way to kick off the 2021 Championship Tour.

Next up, Sunset. #GoTyler. #Vai Medina.
