Rip Curl Junior Coaching Camp at Surf Snowdonia
17 julio 2017
The Rip Curl Junior Coaching Camp recently went off at Surf Snowdonia.
With the green fields and mountains of Snowdonia as a backdrop and the key ingredient of perfectly peeling waves every 90 seconds, the Surf Snowdonia inland Wavegarden facility provided an action-packed camp designed to fast-track each surfer’s development.
Split into Under 15 and Under 12 and advanced and intermediates, the camp welcomed some of the most talented boys and girls from England, Wales and Scotland as well as local kids who were keen to progress their skills. Advanced coaching was led by Joel Gray from Rip Curl and instructors from the Surf Snowdonia Academy ran the intermediate sessions.
All surfers came together for classroom technique presentations and post session video analysis as well as group warm up and post surf yoga classes. The BBQ in the on-site super-tipi and surf movie night continued the stoke.
“The whole idea for the Rip Curl Camp was to bring together junior surfers who are just starting out with national champions who already have substantial skill on the water. For me as a surf coach the lagoon is unrivalled in terms of providing the opportunity for quality practice repetition and immediate feedback. No matter what level our surfers were at, after each wave there’s instant feedback and the chance to immediately work on their skill set.
“Gone are the variables that you get in the ocean. Rip Curl are stoked to have been able to help provide this opportunity alongside the epic set up at Surf Snowdonia.” Joel Gray Rip Curl Marketing UK.
Lauren Sandland age 11
“The training was really good and the videos and all of the training will definitely help me to improve my surfing. I’d love to go back and do it again.”
Sam Hearn U14 English National Champion
" I had a rad time it's the perfect place for coaching, learnt so much in the space of two days and had great fun with the boys.”
Ben Larg U14s Scottish National Champion
“I did the advanced sessions and my sister Robyn did the intermediate. We both learnt a lot and absolutely loved it.”
Ollie Keast 13 - UK
“What an amazing facility the Wavegarden is at Surf Snowdonia, well worth the travel from the South West.”
Bertie Norman 12 - Bude
“I was practicing getting down closer to the face of the wave and using my hands when turning by dragging in the face of the wave.
It is also really cool staying in the pods and we could skate around having good fun with everyone when not in the water.”
Eli Perrins Davies U12 Welsh National Champ
“it was absolutely brilliant. So good to hang out with all of the other surfers too and was perfect place to get used to my new board. I loved it.”
Jo Dennison, head of the Surf Snowdonia Surf Academy and five-times Welsh Champion surfer said: “It’s so good to see the next generation of surfers making the most of Surf Snowdonia for training and honing their skills. The amount of wave time and expert coaching we can deliver allows a platform for rapid technical surf improvement.
“The camp was also a strong motivator for the local beginner and intermediate junior surfers we had attending the course. It was great for them to see what is possible on the advanced wave, and we hope that camps like these will help to raise the level of surfing and participation in North Wales”.
After the success of the camp Rip Curl and Surf Snowdonia are looking at running further Junior Coaching Camps in the Autumn. Check out Surf Snowdonia’s website for more details.
