Rip Curl was proud to announce in spring 08 the success of our neoprene recycling project. Never again would this material – so valuable to surfers in cold waters – be treated as trash ! Project Resurrection can now save old wetsuits and production off-cuts from a gruesome end (burial or incineration), by offering worn neoprene a second life : reincarnation as a footwear outsole.

In 2006, as the world leader in the production of wetsuits, in partnership with the “Conseil Régional d’Aquitaine” (French south west region), Rip Curl launched a research program into the recycling of neoprene. We wanted to find some kind of use for old wetsuits, and for the production off-cuts, which constitute about 150 tons of waste per year.
“PROJECT RESURRECTION” Beanbags for the Surfrider Foundation.
In July 2007, Rip Curl launched “Project Resurrection” by collecting wetsuits that had come to the end of their life. These collections took place on-site at the Rip Curl Pro Hossegor-Seignosse and in Rip Curl Pro Stores. More than 400 kilos of neoprene were collected in this way. Wetsuits which were still usable were given to young surfers in Morocco via Rip Curl Maroc. A portion of the remaining neoprene was chopped up and used as filling for beanbags, whose outer-shells were made out of old Rip Curl event banners.
These one-off, designer beanbags were auctioned off on the Internet during the Rip Curl Pro WQS 6* in August 08. The proceeds were donated to the Surfrider Foundation.
The Basque connection
At the same time, the research initiated in 2006 to find a large-scale recycling program was turning towards footwear, which offered sufficient volumes to absorb the amount of waste generated, as well as using materials that could integrate neoprene. At the beginning of 2007, after numerous attempts at coming up with the right formula, and plenty of resistance testing, a new material was created : “resurrection rubber”, a mixture of chopped neoprene (30%) and rubber.
This material is manufactured in France, and the search for a local product ended up in Mauleon, in the heart of the Basque Country, with the conception of the “must-have” item for summer ’08, the Resurrection Espadrille*. With an organic cotton upper, printed with Öko-test certified ink, a sole made of “resurrection rubber”, and a limited distribution zone, the Resurrection Espadrille represents an excellent ecological end product, and stands out as a symbol for the Rip Curl Planet initiative.
The Asian Connection
This technology was adopted by our Asian partners in 2007, with the goal of using all the neoprene off-cuts in the manufacture of footwear outsoles. All the off-cuts will now be transferred from our wetsuit factory to our footwear production sites. This re-cycling will allow us to avoid the treatment of 150 tons of waste, as well as replacing the same amount of raw materials. In the Summer ’09 Collection, there will be a total of 8 models of slaps, which will use “resurrection rubber”. We’re working on having the vast majority of our range of Summer’10 with “resurrection rubber” outsoles. Fantastic result for a project, which is very close to our hearts here at Rip Curl.
The Collection continues
Rip Curl continues to collect old wetsuits. So don’t throw away those old leaky, cracked piles of neoprene, molding away at the back of your garage! Take your old wetsuit to one of the participating Rip Curl Pro Stores (Biarritz, Anglet, Hossegor, Bordeaux, Merignac, Brest, Paris, Marseille and Chamonix), and Rip Curl will re-cycle it.

Rip Curl était fier d’annoncer au printemps 08 l’aboutissement du projet de recyclage du néoprène. Plus jamais cette matière - si chère aux surfeurs en eau froide - ne serait traitée de déchet ! Le Projet Resurrection sauve les vieilles combis et les chutes de production d’une fin atroce (enfouissement ou incinération) et offre au néoprène déchu une seconde vie : la réincarnation en semelle de footwear.En 2006, le leader mondial de la combinaison isothermique lançait en partenariat avec le Conseil Régional d’Aquitaine un programme de recherche de recyclage du néoprène. L’enjeu était de trouver une valorisation au déchet que constituent les combinaisons isothermiques et mais également celle des chutes de production qui représentent environ 150 tonnes de déchets/an.
Des poufs « Projet Resurrection » pour Surfrider Foundation.
En juillet 2007, Rip Curl lançait le projet Résurrection, avec la collecte des combinaisons en fin de vie sur le site du Rip Curl Pro à Hossegor-Seignosse et dans les Rip Curl Pro Stores. Plus de 400 kilos de néoprène ont ainsi été récoltés. Les combinaisons encore utilisables ont été offertes via Rip Curl Maroc à de jeunes riders marocains. Une partie du néoprène restant a été broyée pour remplir des poufs dont l’enveloppe est fabriquée avec les bannières des précédents événements Rip Curl.
Ces poufs uniques et super design ont été mis aux enchères sur internet pendant le Rip Curl Pro Hossegor-Seignosse 2008. L’intégralité des profits a été reversée à Surfrider Foundation.
La filière basque
Parallèlement, les recherches initiées en 2006 pour trouver un recyclage à grande échelle s’orientaient vers le footwear, qui propose les volumes suffisants pour absorber la quantité de déchet, et utilise des matières se prêtant à l’intégration du néoprène. Début 2007, après de nombreux essais de formulation et tests de résistance, un nouveau matériau est créé : le « resurrection rubber », un mélange de néoprène broyé (30%) et de caoutchouc.
Ce matériau est fabriqué en France et la recherche d’une utilisation locale aboutit à Mauléon, au cœur du Pays Basque, avec la conception du produit tendance de l’été 08 : l’Espadrille Resurrection. Avec sa tige en coton bio, imprimée à l'encre à l'eau certifiée Öko-Tex, sa semelle de contact en « resurrection rubber », et son transport limité, l’Espadrille Resurrection présente ainsi un bilan écologique excellent et s’impose en symbole de la démarche Rip Curl Planet.
La filière asiatique
Cette technologie a été adaptée par nos partenaires asiatiques courant 2007, pour aboutir à l’intégration des chutes de néoprène dans la fabrication des semelles de tongs. L’intégralité de ces chutes va ainsi être transférée de notre usine de combinaison vers notre usine de tongs. Ce recyclage permettra d’éviter le traitement de 150 tonnes de déchets par an, et l’utilisation d’autant de matière vierge. Sur la collection Eté 09, ce sera ainsi un total de 8 références de tongs (10% de la gamme), qui utiliseront le « resurrection rubber ». Nous travaillons à intégrer cette semelle “resurrection” sur une majorité des références de la gamme Eté 10. Un bel aboutissement pour un projet qui tient particulièrement à cœur à Rip Curl.
La collecte continue…
Rip Curl continue la collecte des combinaisons en fin de vie. Ne jetez pas ces vieux bouts de néoprène poreux et craquelés qui moisissent au fond de votre garage ! Ramenez votre vieille combi dans un des Rip Curl Pro Stores participant à l’opération (Biarritz, Anglet, Hossegor, Bordeaux, Mérignac, Brest, Paris, Marseille et Chamonix), Rip Curl va la recycler.
