Energy:
We ran an evaluation of our energy use in 2007, co financed by ADEME (the French governmental environment and energy agency), at the company’s headquarters and the two flagship stores in Hossegor in order to identify where we can save energy.
Objective: 20% reduction in energy consumption by the end of 2009, dropping from 47.2 kwh/m² to 37.8 kwh/m² for the headquarters and from 359.7 kwh/m² to 287.8 kwh/m² for the two flagship stores. The actions will be duplicated to the 46 Rip Curl stores across Europe.
Paper & cardboard:
We established early 2007 user codes for photocopiers, invest in recto-verso printers, and set up an awareness program to reduce printing volume for the entire company.
Objective 2010: - 25%, dropping from 5 600 to 4 500 sheets/year/person
- For product shipping, we reuse as much as possible the cardboard boxes we receive from our suppliers. But a lot of those are to cheap to be reused. So we incite our suppliers to improve the quality of their cardboard boxes to ensure better rate of reuse.
- 2010 Objective: the rate of reuse to jump from 40 to 80%; this will economise 50 000 cardboard boxes per year and reduce our cardboard box waste by 136 tonnes annually
General purchase:
Rip Curl’s purchasing manager, trained by ADEME, works on referencing ecological products:
- Cleaning paper and products that carry the European Ecolabel (Blue Angel or Nordic Swan for paper).
- 2010
Objective: 100% of material purchased will carry this label, compared to 40% today.
- Choosing our suppliers of computers based upon their environmental commitment.
- The company’s fleet vehicles are chosen according to their ecological performance.
